free2worship.com Offers Free Music!

NEWS: From free2worship.com Free2worship.com launches in January 2007! This Web site, basically a virtual filing cabinet of worship songs written by Dave Hill, contains mp3 files, lyric & chord charts, leadsheets and more, all available to download for free.

When asked why free2worship.com makes its music free, Dave Hill, said that he's always wrestled with the idea of selling music that he writes for ministry or worship. "Maybe I'm just not business-minded", Dave says, "but I've often wondered why publishers of Christian music were businesses instead of non-profit organizations.  I understand the expense required to run and market a business but it just seems odd to me that to minister through music in the church you have to purchase Christian CDs, buy the sheet music or songbook, buy performance tracks, and then subscribe to licensing organizations to make sure your're legal when you use the music in church that you've purchased.

I suppose if I were making a successful living as a songwriter I might be content to be involved in the business of Christian music but then I probably wouldn't be launching free2worship.com. But this is something I feel strongly called to do."...

The basic principle for using free2worship.com music is this: If you're not making money from it then you're most likely using it as intended. free2worship's primary interest is in providing free worship music to the Christian community in as many usuable formats as possible so you can in fact be, free2worship!

Dave HillDave has a track record of having a few songs published and sees this optimistically that people will like his music when they hear it and want to use it in worship. "I've never been one to get out there and try to promote myself or my music" Dave says, "It's a time-consuming job to attend concerts, make contacts, track-down artists and all the right people in the business to try and get a song published." When it's all said and done, songs get published based on the decision of just a few people and not based on public opinion. Songs that become popular are simply an indication that those who chose to publish them made a good decision. free2worship.com music is different because you decide if it's good or not. If you like a song use it (and vote for it too so others will know someone else likes it). Our songs that have high ratings or large numbers of downloads may be a good indication that it's a good song."

While marketing experts might say that free2worship.com should put a price on its music so that the public senses it has more value (after all, everyone can afford 99 cents for a song), Dave would rather let his music be free so that it can be attainable by anyone and everyone; young and old, rich and poor (after all, just because someone has an internet connection doesn't mean they have a credit card in their pocket). So what about the advice of the marketing experts?  Does free2worship.com make it's music free because no one would pay for it anyway?  You'll have to judge that for yourself. So go ahead and give a listen to the songs at free2worship.com and then take a minute to rate the songs you listen to so free2worship.com and everyone else knows which songs are most popular.

Dave chooses to put his music out there making it free to the public to decide if it's worth singing and listening too. So if you like a song spread the word. "The greatest joy a songwriter could have is knowing that a song you wrote is helping people around the globe worship our great God!".

"The name 'free2worship' came to mind one day along with the concept of actually providing all the music for free to worship with. I had an urge to check to see if the domain name was registered and was very surprised to find that it was available", Dave recalls. "So I quickly registered it. I think it's a great concept, and there's really nothing to lose considering the songs might otherwise never be heard." free2worship.com is a win-win situation; especially if a song or two can be used to draw people into worshipping our Lord and Savior."

Dave believes that soon, music publishers will start giving away many free mp3s to CD projects (maybe even entire CDs) in order to get consumers interested in their products and artists for future sales. But that's not the intent of free2worship.com. While a mechanical license is still required for those who want to record free2worship.com music on CDs for resale, for general users and church worship leaders the music at free2worship.com is free to get, free to sing, and free to play and the plan is to keep it that way.
